I'm interested in knowing how U. of I.'s English Department ranks among universities. What are the top ranking universities for English & Rhetoric majors.
Answer:
Dear Interested: The
Gourman Report ranks both the University of Illinois' undergraduate
and graduate English programs as 24th in the nation. (See the
attached sheets.)

There is however, some controversy as to the accuracy of Dr. Jack
Gourman's rankings. Take a look at the evaluation methods and
criteria on pages 2-3 in the undergraduate edition, and on pages 1-
3 in the graduate and professional edition.

Certainly, Gourman's rankings are generalizations at best.
Different colleges and universities will obviously have different
strengths and weaknesses not necessarily described in The Gourman
Report. In other words, when choosing a school or program,
personal interests and goals cannot be taken into account by any
ranking or list of "the best..." Beginning to wax philosophic,
